Turns on many antioxidant genes (like glutathione, SOD, catalase) via the ARE sequence. The T allele in the promoter reduces NRF2 activity, leading to lower total antioxidant capacity. Carriers have less SOD, catalase, GPX activity and are more prone to insulin resistance and artery stiffness due to less antioxidant protection.
