Produces the SOD3 enzyme (extracellular SOD) that works outside cells (in blood, lungs) to break down superoxide radicals. The G allele lowers SOD3 activity (less enzyme activity and lower lung function/higher blood pressure observed), so carriers have slightly higher oxidative stress in the lungs and circulation.
