Needed for magnesium absorption in the gut and reabsorption in the kidney. The C allele creates a premature stop in the TRPM6 channel, greatly reducing its function. Carriers (especially CC) can have low magnesium levels (hypomagnesemia), leading to muscle cramps, weakness, or even seizures unless they get extra magnesium.
