Converts the “storage” thyroid hormone (T4) into the active form (T3) by removing iodine. A less active variant (A allele) results in lower T3 levels and people often feel better on combined T4/T3 therapy if hypothyroid. Carriers of this variant do better with a mix of thyroid hormones rather than T4 alone.
